The 2012 ICPC North American Qualifier

On September 29, 2012, a team of volunteers offered a

qualifying contest for all North American college students as preparation for the upcoming ICPC regional competitions. Coaches (or self-organizing students) could form teams however they wished and use the competition for anything from practice to qualification for the regional competitions. Participants only needed an internet-connected computer with a web browser to submit code and receive responses through the contest control system Kattis. The contest was a great success: we had 164 institutions register and 730 participating teams who made well over 8000 submissions over the 5 hour contest. I will discuss the successes and challenges as well as where we expect the contest to go in the future.
