Informal conversation as a resource in collaborative problem solving

In 2010, the ICPC Challenge was expanded beyond the ICPC community. ACM Queue Magazine and ICPC contributors worked together to create the Queue ICPC Challenge – an offering of a program-vs-program tournament to ACM members and Queue readers. The 2011 offering of the Queue ICPC Challenge added a mechanism for developer-to-developer collaboration through Google groups. This paper offers an analysis of inter-competitor communication through both Google Groups and through the Facebook group supporting all ICPC Challenge activities. Results of content and thematic analyses will be shared, as well as ideas for leveraging similar opportunities in the collaborative learning process.
